Interior with Statuettes
Dimensions: 40" x 55"
Medium: pencil on paper
Date: 2012
Description: In both subject and process, these drawings examine how the grandeur of richly patterned illusion is reconciled with modest means: 2B pencil and large format paper. The self-portrait ceramic figurine is drawn within various hypothetical and absurdly elaborate contexts, inspired by old architectural renderings, Victorian photographs, and a recurring dream. These drawings consider the palace image as a quirky cosmological symbol of one’s interior life, in all its rich complexity. In the midst of the palace stands the statuette protagonist: modest, slightly overweight, placed and displaced within her context.
